As a future educator, I firmly believe that every student should receive a well-rounded holistic education. This includes integrating, or blending, topics from other content-areas into your own content-area. An example of this is in the following video. Today, as a part of my field experience, I taught my first lesson in 8th grade, as a part of my field experience this semester. Over the past few weeks, the students been working a lot with functions and how they can be applied to solve real-world problems. My lesson was an extension: I taught the students about increasing, decreasing, and constant functions, in addition to “live action” functions. All of the functions I taught in my lesson had a relationship with time, whether it be height and time, distance and time, or speed and time.

Calculators have made many calculations easier for us. However, implementation of mental math strategies can help students think critically and cause less reliance on calculators. What are some good ways to do this?
